Kondenz, Belgrade and LocoMotion, Skopje are two festivals dedicated to contemporary dance and the performing arts. They were both launched in 2008, in response to the gap between big and market-oriented local festivals of the performing arts and local contemporary performing arts communities. The initiators started by presenting smaller, new, and different works, and inviting  audiences to learn about the state of the performing arts today, as seen by the festival programmers.

In addition to this, they this year have initiated what is called The Curatorial Programme, inviting a group of fifteen artists, theorists, and curators from Western Europe and the Balkans, thinkers who can offer interesting combinations of artistic and discursive practices and experiences, as well as relations to the problems of curating. They are all invited to act as co-curators, that is, to submit proposals, pieces, practices, situations, discussions, games, meals, reading sessions, etc. The proposals may be individual or collective, existing or new or emerging.

As one of these proposals, a Lunch Beat session will be carried out simultaneously with the Stockholm session October 25, at Magacin in Belgrade. Hopefully we will suceed in live streaming these to events to each other, meaning that you will all be able to dance with each other no matter your geographic position. More event deatils to come!

LunchBeat 25/10 : Deep down the Oct. alley

October 25 it is time for Lunchbeat to once again burn a hole in reality and during 1 hour provide you with the most energizing lunch experience ever imaginable. For the Stockholm session, DJ Anna Messa will provide us with a heavy weight tape mixing genres all growing close to deep house.

Where starts the story about lady Messa?

My interest in electronic music took off here in Malmö five years ago, and I started out first as a club promoter, but about one year ago I started to DJ myself, and i’ve been playing frequently at clubs since then. Mostly in Malmö, but also in Stockholm, Oslo, Copenhagen and Berlin, with great names like Nina Kraviz (RU), Ida Engberg (SE) and Catz n Dogz (PL). I’m now resident DJ at Noize! Sweden.

And when you are not occupied with making dancefloors move?

I’m hitting the books quite hard this falll, taking my bachelor in Sociology of Law. Of course a lot of time is also spent on music! House and techno has meant a lot to me over the years, and as long as it stays that way, I will continue to play.

What can people expect who attend your LunchBeat session?

A sweet n sour mix of groovy sexy vibes with a touch of bass, served on a chilled platter. During the summer  I have enjoyed a couple of great releases on Diynamic, one of my favorite labels, as this one below:

How will you prepare when mixing for Lunch Beat Deep Down the Oct. Alleyt?

I will do as I always do; put my best effort to bring a groovy crisp set that will make people dance and sweat from beginning to end.

Listen to other mixes by Anna Messa on Soundcloud.

Lunchbeat October all around

October sessions are also beeing planned in Gotheburg and Norrköping. Details will pop up in time. If you are planning a Lunchbeat session elsewhere, please let us know to make us able to promote it here!

Thank you for beeing part of a sparkling community! / m.

Lunch Beat 27/9 : Burning Leaves Live Session

Originally Lunch Beat is a club based on pre-mixed tapes by selected DJs. This to make it easier to share the mix and support local hosts in co-arranging the club in real time. But, this one time, we thought it could be fun to try something new. And on that note, ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you to;

Mayka Live at The Studio

The hungry, ecstatic DJ visionary Mayka describes her self  as a music lover and  dreamer for whom only production and DJ:ing really matters;

”It is the only thing that fills my head and I love to share all the hidden treasures I find, making people happy”

For the next Lunch Beat session she will make an exclusive live performance in the Studio at Kulturhuset in Stockholm and promises an energetic set mixing electro, house and nü disco, most preferably with lots of bongos, percussions and cowbells. And of course tons of distorted baselines.
To get in shape for the Burning Leaves Live Session we suggest you to listen to one of Mayka’s favourite tunes below, and maybe it is a good idea to follow her own preparations;

”I will eat pasta. Stretch. And of course figure out what tracks will suit a lunch disco best”

Sirius by Congorock

Attend the Burning Leaves Live Session 27/9 on Facebook to give us a hint on how much food to order. Also check out the local Gothenburg session for more info about the emerging Westside movement.

Thank you for being part of a magic community, with love /m.

Lunch Beat 30/8 : First Fall Freakout

Photo: Isabell Wedin

And we’re back!

After a oh so long summer we are finally ready to drop you some lunch time beats;  Tuesday August 30 the Stockholm community will once again be welcomed to the roof top at Kulturhuset and The First Fall Freakout session. Last time was kind of crazy (> moving picture proof by Idea Society).

This time the amazing DJ duo Hagen & Céclie will do us the mixing pleasure.

4 ears, 4 eyes and 4 arms can in our case only mean good

”We met in Gothenburg when we were studying bakery. (Yes it’s true and it kicks ass). We soon realized our common interest in electronic music and we became good friends. Later that year we played records at our friends club. He had a long empty spot and knew that we were friends and had a lot of records. At first we hadn’t plan to do it regularly but since it turned out to work really well, we continued! It’s like we bring out the best in each other. And 4 ears, 4 eyes and 4 arms can in our case only mean good”.

So what is your strategy for creating the mix?
”Our strategy is to build the perfect dynamics with the world’s best rhythms and melodies. Just what you need to reach ecstasy. Now, doing this without being at the dancefloor is going to be a little bit hard, we know, but we’re really exited to try! And we have an idea…”

Check out more mixes by Hagen & Cecilé on Soundcloud & pre-enjoy this Jeremy Glenn track to get in the mood. Or as H & C puts it;  ”Try not to close your eyes and dance when you here this… But expect more energy 30/8, it will be all feelgood house and hands in the air!”

Lunch Beat at large: Göteborg & Malmö sessions

Lunch Beat Göteborg will take place for the first time 30/8 at Victoriapassagen. Check out the event on Facebook for details. In Malmö the energy is high but unfortunatley we still miss a good place to dance at. If you got any suggestions, please let Maria know!

The autumn sessions in Stockholm are all planned (dates in hte right site column). and local arrangers in Malmö and Göteborg will hopefully do the same. On the Next Event? page you’ll find updated info and links to event details on Facebook.

Take care friends and see you soon! /m.

Getting Ready to Be Harder

Tony is born and raised in Almunge, north of Stockholm. In the late 90’s he left the woods for Uppsala where he for a couple of years was a successful club DJ mostly into hiphop and break beats.

”It was always a pleasure to play, put honestly I can’t say I was anything but happy leaving that town”.

When moving to Stockholm Tony started his carer as a graphic designer and has since then mostly been playing as a inhouse office DJ cheering his colleges up with fresh picks and new releases. He is also a regular lunch beat visitor and comments on his opportunity to make a mix;

I think that the sessions so far has been a little bit too slow. I mean, in my set there will be no time for rest. My ambition is to let the music grow and grow during the entire hour. People leaving Lunch Beat this time will hopefully be exhausted and full of energy at the same time. You could maybe look a stairs to describe my mix, together we will climb higher and higher – kind of suitable for the dance floor with a view right?”

So what kind of music will build this one hour climbing session?

”Mostly electrohouse, disco and dubstep. One of my favourite tracks right now is this one

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0AoB0nc9ew&w=640&h=390]

And when he is not into searching the web for new releases, Tony is collecting furniture form the 50’s and frequently falls in love with people who are really into what ever they are doing.

”The only way of doing something is doing it great. That is the ambition I am putting into the Lunch Beat mix. Looking forward to share it with you all!”

Please join Lunch Beat Stockholm May 24 at Kulturhustaket.

Please know that I fancy you for making this happen with me /Molly

On May 24 the Time Has Come for a Roof Top Take Over

Yesterday Lunch Beat Stockholm beat all the records – it was louder, more crowded and burning of heat like ever before. Some one wrote about it, some one else made a film, and the DJ put his mix in the cloud. But most of us just went back to work as if it was an ordinary Tuesday . We all knew it wasn’t.

On May 24 we will meet again. This time at Kulturhustaket at Sergelstorg, Stockholm City.

Please feel free to bring all your colleges and friends, but make sure you all RSVP if you want me to fix a lunch for you. And please don’t forget to introduce our new community members to the Lunch Beat manifesto, and respect that people you meet at LunchBeat in some cases do not want to be recognized by you in any other context.

More info about the event in Malmö will come shortly.

Thank you for making it happen / Molly

April Session : A B-Boy’s Broken Story

Martin Östman is a musician mostly known as his alter ego Emilio, bassist in the contemporary slapstick group Sirqus Alfon. He also makes his own soul music and produces music of various styles. And not to forget, he just loves to Dj his own edits…

For those attending Lunch Beat on the 19th of April in Stockholm or Malmö, a fresh blend of grooves with soulful and wreckless lyrics is to expect. Or as Martin puts it;

”There will be UK funky, twostep, hip-hop edits and my own dancehall remixes. Join i to get the last traces of winter-shit out of your system and just be beautiful”.

So get ready to celebrate springtime sexiness by listening to Martin’s favourite track of today and please spread the word about our day club revolution!

See you at lunch!

#5 – Lost Dance Legends

March 23 Lunch Beat #5 takes place in Stockholm and Malmö.

The mixtape is made by the P3 Dance legend Calle Dernulf. He is a man with a serious music addiction and as a pre-teen he used to save every penny to be able to by a single a week. He has been working with radio since late 80’s, the last twenty years with Sveriges Radio P3.

What have you been thinking to be able to create a great lunch club mix?

Ah that’s a tough one since i haven’t been to Lunch Beat myself. But I like when things happen and don’t get too boring so hopefully it’ll be diverse and include various moods.

What can we expect from your mixtape?

Some great house, techno and things inbetween. One of my favourites right now is Julio Bashmore’s – Battle for middle you. It has a bit of 90’s rave nostalgia and makes it sound like the way forward with a deep bassline and a great melody. That’s me on the melodic tip.

When it comes to the rougher technosounds I kinda like this one as well as the Sydenham track with more focus on the drums.  So hopefully this explains that it’s gonna be a bit of everything happening, from the melodic to the more banging stuff.

Please RSVP on FB for the events in Stockholm or Malmö.

Thank you for making magic happen! /M & M

#4 – This Tronic Life

After meeting Daniel Odelstad to get him to tell what he is planning for the first of the three Lunch Beat Spring Sessions, the impression that lasts is a lot of laughter.  He is one happy guy and for his mix This Tronic Life a lot of happiness sure is to be expected.

”I want people to feel euphoria when dancing to my music.”

So what does he actually mean when referring to ”my music”?

”Well, I guess you are welcome to meet me at the point when indie brakes down and transforms into electro house. My ambition is that the people attending shall be crying of happiness and be so sweaty they all have to get new shirts”.

To prepare for his set he suggests you to eat a lot of pasta and listens to his favorite track for now; Distance of the Modern Hearts by Kamp!
